Any one have any idea's on the removal of the resvoir top. Seems like the threads have gone rusty.

Cheers

Mark

abarth69,i think you should not attemp to remove the cap untill you take the can out of the car, introducing rust dust/chips etc will not help the brake system, youll probably have to get a new can if its that bad.

Channel lock pliers, but you must hold the can steady so that you don't bend or loosen the brake and clutch lines exiting the bottom of the reservoir. Once opened you certainly may find it necessary to replace the reservoir. I would be careful using PB Blaster so that you don't introduce it to the brake fluid, although a shot or two underneath the closed cap might help break it free. Just be sure to clean the PB Blaster off the threads afterwards.

Not sure what is going on with but the overall condition of the can and top is perfect. No signs of rust or cross threaded but she will not move. Even tried a rubber strap around the top and the wife jar opener. She will not move.

I got it off

Thanks

Glad you got it.

I've used a rubber strap wrench to remove a stuck cap without damage.

Strap wrenches? wouldn't give a nickle for the factory that make em. Channel Locks,--- Channel Locks,---en bigger ones if required.--Keoke- /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

The interesting thing here is. There is no way you are going to put an Ali top on a tin can and it not seize up! So you either do as I did and replace the top with a plastic one from a Volvo,or you are doomed to carrying the channel locks in the boot.

Hi Keoke, I guess that's why the original caps were made of steel. Unfortunately the DPO used channel locks and buggered the original up. The repo aluminum caps are quite weak and soft but probably the only available except for NOS if one wants an original looking engine bay.

BTW, if those strap wrenches are just too cheap for you, Snap On makes some really nice expensive ones! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Wouldn't loosen the Sparking Plug tubes in the Hemi V8 had to sent to the UK for a special tool.

P.S. If the originals be steel then it gonna rust instead of corrode so you be froze up no matter which way you go.- /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

What?!? why didn't you just use your channel locks? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

45 years on the steel Girling cap and not a speck of rust ... and before someone claims it's really some aluminum alloy I checked and a magnet sticks to it. Might just put a dab of Girling brake grease on the threads and call it a day.

Cheers,
John

Couldn't use the channel locks John, cuz I loaned em to a friend to remove the top on his brake reservoir.---Keoke- /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif
