I've recently taken off the brake drums to redo the entire rear brakes and suspension. Drums look fine inside, except on the outside they're a little rusty. I've sanded and wire brushed them and used some rust remover. Is there any reason I can't paint them to protect them more? If so, what kind of paint should I use? Thanks all.
 
You just need to use high-temp paint. Actually, caliper paint is very popular now, and you usually can get some at a local auto parts store. They usually have black, red and silver.
 
I just used hi temp gloss black which is readily available as engine paint and seems to hold up fine. I *think* that is the correct color and if you have wire wheels looks best(IMO).

I painted my rear brake drums with caliper paint, 'sept I chose to spray it on. Follow the directions thinning it and used a throwaway spray gun from NAPA. Left them smooth, streak-free and impervious to brake fluid. I have the aluminum finned drums (Mazda I think) and they do look good. Yellow, not exactly stock looking. Painted the front calipers (brushed on) the same. They do stand out!
