Brake Back Plate and Drum Paining

Good Day....

I have not posted a note for a while but follow the postings daily. The 55 BN1 is all apart, body work complete in Epoxy Primer and frame ready to go out for the restoration.

In doing small parts and the like I'm starting the brake drums and was wondering what's the best paining procedure for the back plates and drums? I ordered some Silver from Moss so I'll have that on hand.

Any insight will be most welcomed.

Hi Michael:

The differential and brake back plates would be in chassis black – that’s it for all the steel parts. For effect you could choose to leave the aluminum yoke section of the differential natural color to make things interesting.

POR has an excellent Chassis Black product in a 16 OZ spray can. Drums may be painted wire wheel silver as described. Others may suggest powder coating for some of these components.

Again this paint scheme is a matter of preference; it may not be concourse. I'll have to defer to others on this. Hope this helps. Good luck on the restore. GONZO

Did you order the brake caliper paint system or the wheel paint? Probably either would work but having the higher heat and chemical resistance of the caliper paint would be better. I think Tire Rack sells the same kit. If the drums have been painted many times before, you might consider media blasting to remove the old layers. At any rate, the cleaner the surface the better the paint adhesion and finish.

As Gonzo points out, the backing plates and entire rear end should be a semi-gloss black a.k.a. chassis black. Hirsh automotive and Eastwood have these paints. I'm using a semi-gloss Imron for these parts on my resto but that requires spray equipment.

On the other hand, I just checked the Concours Guide and the silver for the drums should be the same color as the wheels. I would guess that the caliper paints that I mentioned previously would be a brighter silver. An interesting point though for those who have calipers. Most of the original calipers were painted a dull black. Some were painted silver so you can choose either way and be within the guidelines.
