TR2/3/3A Bracket

I disassembled my '56 TR3 16 years ago and thought I marked all the parts as to their location. Unfortunately I seemed to have missed a bracket. I believe it is supposed to be attached to the steering column somewhere, but I am unable to find the location. Can anyone help? I have attached a photo. TR3 Bracket 001.jpg

Kind of looks like the bracket that reinforces the steering box mounts. But AFAIK it was only fitted to later cars, with the "wide mouth" apron. Could it have been retrofitted?

Sorry I don't have a good photo handy. But you can see part of the bracket I'm talking about, under the dirt and grease in the middle of this photo.

Not visible in the photo is the round spacer that goes between the bracket and the frame extension.

There is also a distance piece that goes with that bracket together with a longer bolt on the bottom steering box attachment point.

After I finished the restoration of my 1958 TR3A in 1990, I had this same piece left over. So while I was at Triumphest in Ventura California, I crawled under the front of several very original TRs and found the answer. It takes a long bolt as shown and noted above as well as a spacer tube between the inside of the lower end of this bracket to the frame so it can all be tightly secured with the long bolt.

Ah, I see my mistake. The steering box support bracket was present on the earlier cars, it just changed when the 3A was introduced. The spacer was only on the later cars, though. The early bumper supports were flat, so the steering box support fit flat against the bumper support. But the later ones were U-shaped, so the spacer was needed to fill in the gap. And the support bracket had to kick out farther to pass over the U-shaped bumper support/frame extension.

Interesting. Don't think I have that bracket on my 56. Will have to look again at both the car and various boxes of parts that came with it. Glad you asked the question. Cheers, Mike

Thanks to all of you for your input. I will crawl under my TR3 sometime this week and try to locate the correct position for the bracket. Taking things apart is always easy, but time, old age and other distractions make putting things back together a bit of a challenge. Happy Motoring!
