TR6 Bracket needed

My steering column is loose. Turns out a P.O. sawed off the "torque strap" bracket that bolts up under the steering column -part no, 129 in the Moss catalog and DJ29 in the TRF Blue Book.Both NA.
1. Why would he saw it off?
2. Marvin, anybody- can you sell me this bracket?

Doesn't look like the one in the catalog. I'm not sure what came off there because only the ends were left on. I'll have to check with one of the other TR6 owners around here.
 
It looks like you are after the H bracket that ties everything together and attaches to the shelf ledge at the bulkhead.

That looks like the one. P.O. sawed it off leaving only the ends. I'm going to try and unbolt the ends today - working upside down under the dashboard. Wish me luck.
 
After 5 minutes in an unheated 35-degree garage, I now know why the bracket was sawed in half. The bolts are turning along with the nuts and there is a rubber cover over the tops of the bolts. No way that I can see to get any leverage on the top of the bolt to get it to stop turning. There's just no room up there on top of the clamp. Any advice?

If I'm understanding your dilemma, the "rubber" covers are actually metal, and must be pried off to get a wrench on the bolt heads. It is a bit of a job,
as I think this assembly is something of an anti-theft. Once those caps are off, the bolts can be removed. You will need the "H" piece, which I see
as item 128 on the Moss exploded diagram of the steering column.Part 128 is an aluminum piece that is bolted to the metal under facia of the dash.

I was hoping to get away with not removing the steering wheel, front seat, speedo and tach but it looks like I'll have to do all of those to do the job right. I always hate to remove the speedo and tach with their tricky plug-ins and small wires. Maybe I'll wait until I have the part in hand so I don't have to do the work twice. Some jobs I don't mind but this kind of stuff drives me crazy.
 
PD-Instead of replacing the stuff that goes along with column ignition switch/steering lock, you might consider moving the switch to the dash, like was used on the earlier TR6s. It is a much more convenient location and a fairly easy project. It just involves drilling a hole in the existing plinth or buying one with the extra hole. Also, making extending the wires and of course, buying the switch.

Even if I did that, I still have the problem of the wobbly steering shaft. It looks like the earlier cars had a single strap from the clamp to the dash - at least that what shows in the catalogs. The Bentley manual says nothing about the difference in the two brackets - unless I missed it.
 
Going back to first post. PO probably cut the H brace off beacause he couldn't figure out how to remove ignition sw.I've seen several cars with messed up braces.

Paul,
you should not need to remove the ignition switch or the steering column. You will need to remove the speedo and tach. If you are going to do this, disconnect the battery and label the wires.
If you get heat in your garage I can help when I get some time.
 
I did disconnect the battery and I will certainly label the wires. There are endless possibilities for a short.
We are off to Florida next week. Any further work will have to await our return. I got the bracket from Marv. It should be arriving shortly.
No heat in the garage. There is a heat duct but it is too faint to do any good.
