does anyone know if the contour of the boot lid is the same for the mk1,mk2,mk3, thanks /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I think that depends on what you mean by the "contour" and what you want to do.

Check out the M-Machine web site:
https://www.m-machine.co.uk/Rear%20Panels.htm
and you'll see that early Mk1 boot lids used a frame, most Mk1/2 cars used the double skinned boot lid, and Mk3 dropped back to a frame and single skin arrangement. I think the Mk3 boot lock may be a little different but I don't remember.

The Mk1/2 cars had a different license plate panel that folded down when the boot lid is open. I believe Mk3 cars did away with that and used a fixed plate mount and a built on lamp for the plate. So... I'd say you can probably use any Mk1/2 panel on any Mk1/2 car within reason. The Mk3s will be a little different but will still fit... you'll just loose the fold-down license plate. Likewise, you could put a Mk1/2 boot lid on a Mk3 but you'd have to source the license late holder (w/hinges) and a lamp to use it.

thanks doug ,good site. the boot sits about 1/4" proud just at the tail lights. It seems to fit ok at the bottom and top and the gap is fairly even all round except for the top corners when they almost touch the body. As you look across the back of the car you can see the boot stick out past the body. Unless the car was hit at some time and the repair wasn't done properly(possible). I will also check to make sure the hinges are on the correct side as I believe they are handed.

The hinges are "left" and "right" but I'm not sure how to tell which is which. There could also be an issue with the boot seal. These changed a couple of times over the years. The Mk1/2 cars had clips that held the rubber on and I thought (but don't quote me) that the Mk3 and later seals glue on. If you have a single-wall boot lid and an extra stiff seal, bowing of the panel might explain the gap you're seeing.

Let us know what you find out.
