boot latch assembly

Hi all,
I'm reassembling the boot latch after rechroming and want to double check something. As you can see in the pre-chrome picture below there is a cup that slides down the square shaft and contacts a spring. There are four detents in the shaft (arrow points to one) and I'm assuming the detents need to be chiseled/punched/deformed again to keep the cup in place. I'm not missing any parts am I? Seems a little crude but what the hey .. if it works .. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif

Cheers,
John

Hmmm .. I think there might be a circlip holding the cup on and mine has fallen off or is missing. Can someone do me a favor and take a look at this cup area from inside the boot? It should be visible (barely) when looking from the side though the bracket opening when using a flashlight. I believe the boot handle assembly is the same on all big Healeys.

Cheers,
John

John,
I do not see any circlip on my 64 BJ8. I also have the detents on the shaft, although only two, and they seem to perform no useful function. I believe the shaft is held in place just by being wedged between the handle and the locking part.

Skip,

Thanks for looking. The shaft is held in place with a pin that goes through the handle and shaft. I'm just trying to figure what holds the cup to the shaft in position to keep pressure on the spring (which keeps tension on the handle/lockplate assembly). I don't recall the cup being hard to remove but it has been about 3 years since disassembly so it could have been and I just forgot /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

My old but original BN2 latch has four deep stakes/gouges that hold the cup firmly in place against the spring pressure. I would definitely need to file them down to get the cup off. The square hole in the cup is also a snug fit on the shaft.

Hi Dave,

Thanks .. exactly what I needed to know and will proceed with the assembly with this in mind.

Cheers,
John

Dave is correct. I had to file mine down to disassemble. I figure some careful work with a sharp cold chisle will get it back together.

Hey Ray /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/savewave.gif

There was no evidence of filing from my prior disassembly so couldn't recall how the cup came off. Anyway, used a sharp, well cooled chisel and all is together again.

How's the resto going?

Cheers,
John

Work on the Healey is going slowly. The job and life have been screwing up my schedule. You know I wound up welding a whole new bottom on my frame. That's about 100 feet of stich welding 3/8" at a time. Good thing I have it on a rotisserie. It came out pretty good. Now I'm final checking body panel fit to make sure nothing shifted in the process and picking up little details that I don't want to do in finish paint if I don't have to. Soon to the paint shop for final frame paint and then I can start putting stuff back on. YES!!!
It sounds like you are in the home stretch from the posts I've seen lately. I'm in line for a ride, but you must have a "Now Serving" number machine by the garrage door for that line.
Healey on!

My lovely and understanding wife gets the first ride and can drive it for that matter as many times as she wants before my friends get a chance. Then it's open season! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Glad to hear you are making progress.

Cheers,
John
