What exactly are the options for repairing minor rust pits on the front wings (classic rust by the headlights on a TR6).

Is Bondo taboo?? What would a professional do?

A professional would eliminate as much of the rust as possible through their method of choice, whether it be sand blasting, sanding, etc.
A follow up with a good primer, epoxy is excellent. A good body filler or glaze would be next.
They are in it to make money as efficiently and effectively as possible. Lead is becoming a lost art. Time and health concerns are a couple of good reasons.
You want to hammer and dolly out any dents as much as possible to reduce the amount of filler to a minimum.
Classic rust by the headlights? Expect holes and welding. If no holes, feel very fortunate.
There are many good fillers on the market. As for light work, Icing is very popular and great to work with.(if working with any body filler can be described that way)
 
There's a filler called metal-to-metal that is a plastic containing powdered aluminum. Very strong and sands like aluminum. My first choice to level out the hammer marks.

My preference is to use filler on bare metal, then skim the area with a final thin layer of filler, sand, then epoxy primer sealer, then the build up primer, then top coat of choice.
 
A a sidenote...

A surprising number of young hot rodders are learning the art of using lead in body work. These guys are committed to keeping the old world ways of repair in use for all of us to enjoy.

I've seen dozens of cars that were customized and/or repaired using these old materials and some of the workmanship is simply amazing!
