I'm having problems with my starter engaging so I removed it for now and installed a high torque starter I had. I rebuilt the starter and put it back together the way it was before the rebuild. When it was together the armature could move back and forth a little more than an 8th of an inch. So I took it back apart and found a spacer that measures an 1/8" and moved it to the other side of bushing in the open end of the starter just before the c-clip on the armature. If you closely at the picture you can see the spacer. I have a old junk starter that does not have the spacer at all. So my question is do I now have the spacer in the correct place or should the armature be able to move back and forth. I've looked at many diagrams of the starter and can't see any spacer in any of them. They do have a part number for sundries though.
