I have been trying to find copies of some of the old Car & Driver stuff on Bolus & Snopes, and their mascot Dick Johnson. I remember the magazine had some fun stuff about them and their antics in the days it was a magazine worth reading cover to cover. I had kept a few old copies, but none had these articles. I cannot find them on line so far. Does anyone have a link?

Wow, Dave. Haven't heard of that in a while. Just last evening I asked some fairly car savvy fellas if they recalled Oscar Kovaleski and the PRDA... Same era as B&S, and nobody knew about that either.

Not much help, but a tickle on the gray matter.

Morning Doc,

I have been in touch with Chris Kovaleski who produces DVDs of his families old home movies of Oscar racing in his McLarens over the years. I still have some of my PRDA stuff ( I was a class four member ), and remember that well. But alas, my membership card is long gone. I do correspond with Tony A to Z a bit and he is keeping the Polish Racing Drivers of America alive including a PRDA page on Facebook and includes my only photo of Oscar that I have found so far.

There must be a photo of him with his balaclava up over his eyes someplace. I'll have to start digging around the piles in th' hovel. What started the conversation the other eve was an Auto World decal I have on the inside lid of my toolbox. These supposed enthusiasts had never heard of it. But they're young.

~Bolus and Snopes Racing / Car and Driver magazine (1970s).

I do know the entire B&S team was created by former C and D editor, William Jeanes

I'm also on the VintageRacerRules forum and a while back, Jack Woehrle asked about B&S.
You can see that thread ~HERE~

Hi Dave. Happy Easter to you.

You mentioned you're looking for copies of Car and Driver "Bolus and Snopes" material. As C&D is still being published, seems they could find what you're looking for in their archives, or at least point you to their index. When you contacted the publisher, were they at all helpful?

Tom

Happy Easter to you as well Tom.

I have not contacted them directly yet...I could not remember the name Bolus & Snopes until it hit me around 6:30 this morning. I need to wait till the end of the holiday weekend to see if they are willing to help. Their archives page does not list any of these articles, and has no contact link. Now to get ready to hide eggs for the grandchildren who will be here later today.

wow doc, haven't heard oscars name in a long time. was a fixture at the hillclimb here in the 70's

We were west of ya, Don: Sewickley. And Nelson's Ledges was the "home course" back then. Have tons of negs (B&W) I haven't gone thru yet. Even pix of PLN and team, all in their "orgy" cartoon T-shirts, someplace.

I just wish I could be of more assistance to Dave in finding B&S stuff. But I was a R&T subscriber. ISTR AutoWeek of the time had mention of them, but all those newsprint copies have long been dust.

No problem Doc.

I remember going to Autoworld in Scranton for parts for the 1970 240-Z, and earlier than that I ordered lots of slot car and model car items to feed my addiction in junior high.

I subscribed to Competition Press for years, and stayed until recently with AutoWeek as well. I had lots of back issues of Car & Driver for years, but finally disposed of just about all of them. I especially loved the columns by writers like Jean Shepherd and Dick Smothers. They do not seem to have an archive or index that I can find for the listing of what issues might have B&S information.

I remember seeing Car and Driver when it was called Sports Cars Illustrated. I started subscribing when I was in high school. I also got Comp. Press and Autoweek for many years. And I probably still have a PRDA sticker around here somewhere.

Sadly, these days, Car and Driver is only suitable for lining the bottom of a bird cage.

But for many years, I was a fan of Warren Weith, Jean Shepherd, P. J. O'Rourke, Dick Smothers, Gordon Jennings, Leon Mandel, Csere, Bedard, Yates, Kevin Cameron, Steve Smith and of course, David E.

I did find some columns posted in various places.

It was nothing short of scary watching Oscar Koveleski in his "Super Cooper" scream up the tree lined hill of the Hershey Hill Climb. He was always the FTD, and (in '68) this was against 232 other participants.
