Boeing 787 First Flight

I've got it on video. I was hoping they would take off to the south ,but just in case, they took off to the north
 
Those big commercial planes seem to have very long lifespans. I mean, how long did the 707 stay in service???

BUT, nowadays with fuel economy at the forefront and fossil fuel costs escalating, maybe engine technology will evolve at a faster rate, rendering these big planes obsolete? Interesting.

Anyhoo, a beautiful piece of engineering, and a marvel, IMHO.

Found some interior mock-ups here. As weird as it seems, having the larger windows would be really nice.
 
& they just got a contract to build 20 of them from United!

My lousy attempt at a video guy. Was hoping the plane would take off to the south as the winds where from the southeast. They went north to go over the sound.
 
Read it this morning in my local newspaper.
 
Reason I couldn't find it was that it was announced last week

Not likely.

First off, big planes aren't like big cars, a luxury people were willing to pay for when gas was cheap. Big planes use <span style="font-style: italic">less</span> fuel than their smaller counterparts (per passenger mile traveled).

That's why Airbus is banking on the megabuck, mega<span style="font-style: italic">huge</span> A380.

Of course, that only works if they fill the planes. Which is why Boeing is banking on the medium size 787. By using advanced materials and designs 787 should be cheaper to fly on traditional mid-size routes and <span style="font-style: italic">much </span>cheaper to operate on routes that used to require big planes (for range) but don't have the passenger demand to consistently fill big planes.

Secondly, fuel costs have always been an enormous factor in jet operations. Billions and billions of research dollars were already being spent on engine technology. There will be advances, but don't hold your breath waiting for quantum leaps. It's already one of the most scientifically advanced disciplines on the planet.

Fossil fuels' problems of skyrocketing costs, environmental impact and geopolitical headaches will most likely drive big advances quickly in technologies like synthetic and sustainable fuels.

With a lighter airframe its also cheaper to haul your fuel.
Maint cost cost drops also doing Maint on one large plane has gota be cheaper than a few smallar older aluminum frames.

Whatcha'gottado 2 kep yer fuel wayt down is yew onlee fill'er up 'bout 1/4 tanc whenin yew takin' off. Yew gonna kep yer extra fewl n fiv gallin' buckits n th' plane. Whenin yew start gittin' low awn fewl, jus pour it in frum the fiv gallin' buckits. Thataway, yew aint gotta worry 'bout the plane bein' all heavy wit a ful tanc.
