Body #?

Hello all,
I'm a newbie to the forum...
I have a question about my 1966 TR4A, I've started the restoration and came upon a set of numbers stamped on a thin plate and spot welded outside the left rear inner fender,is this also a body identification #?

Thanks for answering my question...

Roger

Thank you!
the reason I asked is because the body number on the right hand side is missing,
I was wondering if the one I found at the rear inner fender would be the same.

I do have the commission number plate located at the right hand side of the firewall.

thanks again

Roger

As I seem to recall - at least with my Mini - there is a tag such as you describe that was used to track the car through the factory but has nothing to do with VIN number or body number, etc. It seems to me these tags were attached randomly and not recorded as such.

I also have that tag and the number is very close to the commission number. It is not random like the 3A Mulliner's number.

Thanks guys!

these numbers begins with two Capital letters fallowed by five numbers... not even anywhere near the vin numbers.

Is there a TR4A book that could clarify? or does anyone have a TR4A with the same tags...

Thanks for your input...

Roger

On all TR4As there are two riveted aluminum plates under the hood. On the left side, just in front of the master cylinders, is the commission number plate with the paint and interior codes. On a solid axle 4A the commission number prefix is CT while the more common Independant Rear Suspension (IRS) has the CTC prefix. On the opposite side of the engine bay is about a 1/2" X 3" aluminum plate with five digets and a CT suffix. That is the body number and should be within a few hundred of the commission number (usually higher). As far as any other plate welded or attached anywhere else on the body or frame, no never, at least not by the factory.

Triumph Register of America (TRA) has a very detailed 200 page manual for a restoration and Concours guide that I would recommend.

Roger,

I found a plate like this welded in the same place on my 1966 TR4A when I restored it. Unfortunately, my restoration involved a frame and body tub swap and this was on the donor tub/frame so I can't tell you if this is suppose to match the body number as that plate was missing on the donor as well. I recall wondering if it was suppose to match at the time as well.

I asked this question a couple of years ago. I have seen (0wned) two TR4A IRS cars that the commission number had a (1)in front of the CTC . One answer I got to that was a dealer did that to the plate. It looked like it was stamped that way originally. Anybody else seen one like that?

My 66 commission #CT 667xx L left rear wheelwell body plate is ZS 0673xx. The rest of the numbers match nearly the commission number - rear end, engine block. So I assume that the body is also correct and mine is a numbers matching [project] car.

Marv,

I haven't seen anything like that before. Do you have any photos of the commission plates to check the font and how it was stamped?

O.K guys now somethings are showing up, my 66 commission plate # CTC 63xxxLO and the stamped plate left rear inner fender is ZS 76527. I wonder what these numbers mean? My TR is very original it was in barn since 1978 there is not much rot.

Thanks everyone for digging...

I'm not sure this applied as early as some TR4A models, but at least by the late 1960s and into the 1970s, the leading "1" indicated a Belgian-assembled car as opposed to one built at Coventry.
