"body gasket" material

I'm finishing putting stuff back on my TR3 after paint and bought new "gaskets" for (among other things) under the rear deck and hood (bonnet) hinges. All the door and light gaskets I bought from Moss are quite good but the hinge gaskets are too thin and don't fit properly. Considering making my own-- inner tube rubber is too squishy; roofing felt is the right thickness but not sure it would not fray. Any better source for the hinge gaskets or better material to cut my own?

I purchased a roll of gasket material from Autozone that is identical to those expensive precut gaskets you get from the suppliers. I would imagine that O'Reilly and Advance also have it. I seem to remember that it was less than ten dollars for the roll.

Hi Jayhawk I find it amazing how the big two can sell gaskets that are so far off from fitting; it is ridiculous. I use double sided black vinyl. It is thin and strong. You can buy it at an upholster shop and it is tuff. It works great for those body gaskets like mirrors and decklid hinges. It is cheap and strong and I just cut it with scissors then punch out the wholes with a leather punch. In addition, I use a little peace of leather around the Dzus for the hood, so that they do not dig into the paint.

Hi,

Many hardware stores sell sheet rubber in various thicknesses, both reinforced and unreinforced.

For a more rigid material, on occasion I've just bought black plactic "mud flaps" and cut the shape out of those.

Don't use any kind of foam material (weatherstripping, camper tops, etc.)! I uses some under some trim pieces on my TR4 in 1979 and later found nasty rust under those particular spots. The foam retains moisture.

Cheers!

Good ideas, guys-- will check them out. Yeah, I was disappointed with the precut stuff from the parts outfits. The precut/molded ones made for my bug are great-- those companies could do well by expanding to other cars!

I cut up my wifes black plastic flower pots to make door and mirror gaskets for my Lancia HPE. Lancias are made of unobtainium, owning one makes me crazier than most of you. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif

FYI-- I went to a couple of hardware stores and O'Reilly's but couldn't find suitable gasket material. Advance Auto Parts however, had a roll of rubberized gasket material ($4.95) that looks like it will work. Wife has lots of gasket material in old plastic flower pots that are left over from nursery purchases-- Actually that stuff appears tough and "shape-able" Might still use that for mirrors and such.
Thanks again.
