IIRC--I've had my BJ8 for 30 years--both the 'original' olive and the Moss replacements I've purchased have been split lengthwise. Similar olives which you can buy at plumbing and some hardware stores are not split. I too assumed the split would cause a leak, but that hasn't been my experience; the olives get compressed a great deal by the compression nut and it appears the 'split' gets sealed up. The split is a very clean cut; i.e. you couldn't do it with a saw and I have no idea how it's done. The split facilitates installation and, especially, removal.
All the olives I've seen are brass and have a 'double conical' shape; i.e. two cones fitted base to base, with a small flat band at the wildest point.
