BN2 5 speed gearbox

I m thinking of the 5 speed gearbox conversion for a BN2 Im restoring.
My main concern is that I want the gearbox knob to remain in the exact position as the original.
Can anyone recomend me any conversion ??

I do not think that is possible for a BN2 given the position of the shifter. All of the conversions I have seen put the shifter about where the center shifter is.

I would agree with Stevebn. My BN1 and your BN2 have a side shift and I have
never seen a side shift conversion such as Smitty's 5 speed. They all seem to
use modern Toyota 5 speed transmissions and I sure do not know of one of those
that have a side shift shifter. Good luck.

Well At one time there was a company called Victor Engineering that converted Healey gear boxes to five speed. They preceded the Smitty type transmission change out. They were located down south some place maybe Virginia , It was quite expensive at the time as I recall or I was fresh out of funds.-Fwiw--Keoke

Sorry--Though the shifter on BN2's is not as far to the side as that on BN1's nevertheless if you go to a Toyota conversion the shifter will have to be in the center.

I don't know if the current iteration of the conversion still offers the option but when I got mine from Smitty's there were three possible fore-aft locations for the shifter. I opted for the one most forward on my BN1 which is, I think, the best. My wife's BN7 had the conversion installed when I purchased the car--the shifter is a bit further aft and is not as convenient and sits where the ashtray used to be.

I had to fabricate a new tunnel for the BN1 to accomodate the larger Toyota bellhousing--I used a Moss side-shift tunnel and filled the hole. Since the BN2 tunnel is larger you might be able to use the original--or not.

Taking originality out of the equation the five-speed conversion is a wonderful option.
