BN1 Trafficator

Hi all, This is a great site.
Well, we just bought a 1953 100-4 BN-1, early California car. A major restoration project, and of course have started keeping an eye on-line for obvious missing parts.
The car has the orig. adjustable steering wheel, and NO Control head assembly. In Moss motors, they offer one for the adjustable BN4-BN7 for about $300. (Part is N/A for our model.which apparently had a chrome turn signal lever) On line I have found a rebuilt Control Head for AH 100 w/black turn signal lever for $450.00....What exactly should I be looking for here, and How specific do I need to be regarding this part? Can the less expensive one be adapted? Thanks for any help you can give, I am sure you will be hearing from me for guidance as we progress. Thanks!

Hello and welcome to the forum. The most appropriate "trafficator" for your BN1 would have a plain, black (pot metal, painted black) lever. I have seen period photos of 100's with the chrome lever, but the most common, by far, lever for the 100's (BN1 and BN2 series cars) is the one with the plain, black, kind-of-sharp-and-pointed lever.

Also, on the trafficator for your car, the chrome ring that surrounds the horn button is a smooth, plain ring, and not a beveled, "wavy" ring as was used on the later cars.

Also, on the trafficator for your car, the horn button is plain black, with no design or logo in/on it.

They're tough to find (unless there are reproductions available that I'm not aware of).

For a more-or-less local supplier, and good info source for all things Healey give Norman or his son David Knock at British Car Specialists in Stockton a call. They are a Moss distributor , but also have found suppliers for some stuff that Moss either doesn't carry or is a better product. I always spend more than I think I'm going to when I call them, but it is often worth it. Welcome to the world of never ending bits and pieces. When you find what you want, if it is a used unit, just be sure that all of the parts are inside, and that there are no cracks in the plastic. You would have to take the back plate off to tell. It is easy to put them together incorrectly, but there are a few good web pages around that tell you exactly how to do it. BCS in Stockton also sells a book of accumulated technical articles which I have found to be well worth the money. There is a particularly good one on the trafficator assembly. Hope this helps.

Larry varley's site has a good article on reassembly, and I think cape international has original parts available, mines body number 860 and the lever is chromed
