BN1 head gasket? what are the choices?

I just rebuilt the motor and used the standard copper gasket, (I dont have a lot of time for copper head gaskets as I had to change a pair on my boat engines, changed to black cardboard type ones and not a leak since).

I just noticed today a little water seeping from the head right above the distributor.

I notice on a certain parts suplier website they have a steel head gasket, quote...

"Whether used on high compression race engines or simply to stop the constant water leaks down the distributor side of a standard engine"

The thing is this steel gasket is bloody expensive.

What other choices/options are there?

BB, The Blokes over there in the UK say these gaskets work a treat if you thin Halo mar sealer and paint the gasket on both sides and let dry prior to install . I do not know what thinners they be using though, However, I can find out if you decide to go that route.---Keoke

In my experience, "if" the head & block are surfaced perfectly flat, you use the DWR high strength studs, nuts, & hardened steel washers, the two sided copper gasket sprayed with Permatex "Copper Spray-A-Gasket" works very well. No leaks & the the 75 lb/ft bolt torque has never changed. This on an aluminum head.

That being said, since I'm planning to raise the compression ratio considerably on my BN2, I will use the DWR multilayer steel gasket the next time. It is the latest in gasket technology & obviously expensive since there is relatively little demand for such a gasket.

I don't think there is a reliable cheap solution. The Hundred Fours do not have an optimum head bolt pattern/spacing & need all of the help they can get. In my opinion, the studs, nuts, & washers help considerably.

I have about 45K miles on my DW AL head, hardened stud set, etc. and steel head gasket. No leaks, no complaints. If it helps your economic decision any the steel gasket is supposedly reuseable whereas the copper is not.

After discovering I had two gaskets on my BN1, I tried 2 attempts to replace with traditional copper gaskets and existing studs.

In the end on Dave's advice I resorted to spending the cash and getting a composite steel gasket and high tensile studs/washers/nuts from Dave Welch.

Did the job perfectly and would have gone for this day 1 if I had had a crystal ball.
