BN1 gauge removal

I need to repaint the silver gauge surround on my newly purchased BN1 as the previous owner did a fairly rough job on masking the edges. I think I can probably do the job with the dash in place if I just pull the gauges out enough so I can get paint under the bezels.

How do the gauges release at the back?

Many thanks in advance.

There are "u" shaped retainers that have holes to accept the screw thread on the back of the instrument. Knurled nuts are used so they can be slackened with your fingers.
