BN1 / BN2 with a serious identity problem

Greetings!

I recently acquired a heavily modified BN1 or BN2 series vehicle with a serious identity problem. It presently sports a state-issued VIN plate on the firewall, which of course has no relationship to the original chassis number. My goal is to establish the original series and chassis number to use with a repro chassis ID plate from Moss Motors, in order to re-register it with my state DMV under the proper VIN.

So far, the only identifying number I have been able to locate is the body number "3490" on the underside of all three pieces of aluminum cockpit trim. Without going into the depressing details, most of the usual clues (engine, transmission, firewall, front brake drums, rear hubs) that would even serve to identify the series (BN1 vs BN2) are missing or altered.

So, any suggestions from the experts out there?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi & welcome to the forum,

From my limited information, body #3397 was built in May, 1954. Body #3800 was built in June, 1954. Your #3490 is somewhere in between. The first BN2 came out Aug. 1955 so your car is definitely a BN1, or at least was at one time.

You can go here, Heritage Trust in the UK, & for about $60 they will issue a certificate showing the original numbers, dates, colors, etc. Be sure to tell them that you only have the body number. They should be able to search & fill in the rest.

Good luck,
