BMIHT certificate price increase

Hello, Healeyphiles -

If there is anyone contemplating getting the BMIHT certificate for their car but who has not done so, I just learned at the BMIHT website (https://www.heritage-motor-centre.co.uk/archive/certificate/default.htm) that there will be a price increase 1 March, 2005. It's currently $50, but they don't say what the new price will be.

I believe I paid $5.00 (a token gratuity) when I applied for mine back in the 80's. Though I think the actual certificate did get fancier as the price went up. It will be interesting to see what the next one looks like...
 
I paid 5 bucks for mine, too, in 1984, but it was just a letter with the data. Somewhere along the way, BMIHT figured out that issuing certificates could be a profit center. Same data, but a little nicer "suitable for framing" certificate and they could charge more.
It used to be if you had only a body number, gearbox number, or engine number they would do a reverse search to determine the original chassis number as a part of the certificate. Now, they charge a premium to do that and won't normally won't search at all if all you have is a gearbox number or rear axle number, which is true of a bunch of cars now.
If anyone has a BJ8 in this situation, let me know and I can get it done for you.
 
To be quite frank with you I really don't see the merit in the certificate for the majority of the Austin Healey's I've seen. I have two Healey's and have certificate's for both, although it makes for somewhat interesting reading it rarely changes my thinking on color, trim etc. I've always felt that if I'm going to all the time and expense of restoring a car I should be able to choose the color I like. I do believe in staying within the color range offered by the factories however. As for as options go there really isn't an issue here, for instance if your car left the factory with steel wheels, would you not replace them with wire wheels? The location of where the car was sent may be of interest but only to someone caring to research who all the previous owners were.

Hope you don't mind a TR3/MGB owner intruding on your space. If so, tell me and I'll retreat!

A different take: I sent in for the certificate on the TR3, and it came back a bit different from what I had. All my numbers matched, the body color was correct, but the trim was listed as blue leather, and what my car had was stone vinyl. It must have been from original, because it was pretty well dry-rotted, and there was no evidence of it having been changed.

Also, the car was listed as not having a heater installed, but it did indeed have one. I realize this could have been a dealer add-on, but it, too, looked like it was a factory installation.

Still, it's nice to have the certificate, even though the car is now Pearl White with red interior. Anyone else have any discrepancies show up?
