Jack used the information from Anderson & Moment's AUstin Healey Restoration Guide.

You might also find my own spreadsheet useful, if your restoring a BJ8:

https://www.healeyjournal.com/pages/spreadsheets/nutsandbolts.xls

This also cross-references to the BMC parts book and gives general location information; and the entries are coded to show whether the fastener was used with plain washers, lock washers or nuts or various combinations of them.

The Mechanical Service Parts List and the Body Service Parts List has exploded views and Description, Part No., Illustration No. and Quantity (much like the Moss catalog but the Part Numbers have codes for the fasteners). During the restoration I would refer to the factory codes, for example a HBZ 0620 for the bolts that hold the spring pan to the A arms. Then I would look at the printout to find this is for a Hex Head Bolt, Zinc finish, 3/8" x 2 1/2" long. The printout just makes it easier to find the right size without having to decifer the code (06 = 6 x 1/16" = 3/8" and 20 = 20 x 1/8" = 2 1/2")

Cheers,
John

yep John, I had a chance to sleep on it, hehe. Makes so much sense. I have also checked some of the info against the orginial Bugeye parts list numbers and they cross reference nicely. Now I think the thing for me is to go completely through the Bugeye Parts Lists, identify each fastner and put it all on a spread sheet including page and item reference on the part list. And what it belongs to in english.

Oh yea parts list also has qtys. Soo, one of these days I will be able to have a type by qty for a total replacement.

Hay this will keep me out of trouble right?

It most certainly is. I did it on my spreadsheet but chose to use codes to show whether washers and nuts, etc. were used. I wonder if you could take what I've done for the Big Healey and "edit" it for your bugeye?

It was a good job for long winter nights when nothing good was on TV.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

John, from doing the first page small as it is. I think I know understand the system. Now if I knew how to convert your pages to excell I think that would work fine indeed, a couple new colums and away we go. Oh yea, I see no sense in doing washers of any kind. Think the ticket here is to just get them by the box, not many sizes at all.

edit: I did it, just might go a bit faster now, let me play with this a bit.

The British lockwashers of our cars era are a narrow gauge (smaller O.D. than standard). I have a source for 1/4", 5/16", 3/8" and 7/16" sizes at fair prices (.06 cents to .08 cents ea.)

The problem with all new fasteners for a concours restoration is the bolt head markings and lots of special screw head shapes and styles are not avail or hard to find. Many people don't care but just want to point out the original fasteners are rare and valuable (if in servicable condition).

Cheers,
John
