Doc - the hiss/buzz occurs only when the xmitter is powered up, even if all lights and other 120v critters are off.
 
Sorry, I just re-read the thread and I see that you said that already. I still think the next step would be to try and figure out if the transmitter is "generating" the buzz or picking it up from something. Try turning off all of the lights? and anything else you can think of. George
 
Thanks George. Buzz occurs if the unit is powered up. Doesn't matter if there's an audio input or not, or laptop runs or not, or even if lights or other electrical consumers are on.

Seems to me that the buzz in the radio is generated by the xmitter itself. And the buzz on the radio is only when it's tuned to 1000 kHz (the output of the xmitter).
 
The only last test I can think of... If you have another AM radio, Try and transmit to it. (car radio?) with everything else off (including the radio you are trying to use now) If it still buzzes, It has to be the transmitter.
 
Final results are in! Two other AM radios (RadioShack, ca. 1985, and a Sony Walkman) also get the hiss when the unit is powered up. Altho' ... with ambient hiss from local xmitters (people working in farms and orchards), it's not exactly "Clear Channel" on any of the radios.

Looks like you need a new transmitter to plug into your laptop.
 
Interesting tidbit - I turned off the system and went out for an errand. Returned three hours later, turned on the system, and the buzz/hiss is *much* more pronounced.

Atmospherics? When the antenna is only 20 feet from the radio?
