Block Sealer

Has anyone found an effective block sealer? CRC has one with copper, but I don't know if it works or if there might be a better alternative.

Hi Shorn, what on the block are you trying to seal and what model car are you refering too.???---Keoke

For my BJ8. Have replaced the head gasket, but still seem to get some moisture under the valve cover and am losing a little coolant from the radiator. Did a presure test on the radiator and it seems to hold 13#, so if there is a leak, it must be very small. I will try to retorque the head first, but if that doesn't help, I thought I would try some block sealer. It could be some residual water in the system, but that doesn't account for the drop in coolant level. I am not to interested in tearing into the engine, at least until after the summer driving season. Car has 50K on it.

Ok Shorn, most apparent leaks under the valve cover have turned out to be condensation problems. However, did you retorque the head after running the first 200 miles or so. Also are you running an overflow bottle and does the engine run hot 190 Deg or more??? My experience with the BJ8 engines has not shown a requirement for sealer on the head gasket.---Keoke

I have not yet retorqued the head having put only about 200 miles on it, but I will do that next. I was going to do it at about 500 miles. The engine does not run hot, usually about 185, never over 190, unless it is a very hot day and I am stuck in traffic, and then only about 195. I know it could be condensation, but the amount of gunk, sludge, under the valve cover seems too much for just condensation. The drop in coolant level leads me to think there is a leak. No I do not have a recovery bottle for the radiator. I try to keep the level about 2 inches down from the top of the lip or about an inch down into the radiator itself, so I don't push some out through the cap. I don't think I have the problem with the head gasket sealing, but I am concerned there might be a hairline crack in the block somewhere, perhaps oil galleries next to water passages being corroded. I do not however get any oil in the coolant. Maybe, I should drive this thing and forget about it. What worries me though is the belief that antifreeze does bad things to bearings.

OK Shorn, seems like you are up on everthing there, I might suggest you have a look at the exhaust output.May have a bit of water in it more than just condsensation burn off. Never had that valve cover problem on a BJ8 and hope I neve do!.Sorry I was not of more help.---Keoke--P.S. Just keep an eye on the oil if its green, brown or black you are ok ,grey or white you have had it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
