Blind Moose Returns

Looking at my car in the garage (something we do, ya know) the rear wheels are so far out of alignment (major toe-in issues) that I cannot help think of the old Honda Prelude 4-wheel-steer. Boy, would that be a cool concept. Autocross heaven...

Slowly back away and go back into the house Bill. C'mon, slowwwwwly and back into the house. Atta boy......just like that.

Lock the door behind you.......

Paul....It's late.... I'm glassy eyed.... and tired.... retirement is exhausting!

Al..I'm going to practice my pathetic welding skills first. Or I'll talk to a guy I know who does small projects. I'll let you know. The Blind Moose should be here tomorrow.

I'm going the NAPA route for now. If I don't like them I can always go stiffer. But, as we know, I drive like an old lady who gets passed on the highway by the guy cutting the grass.........and then there's the kids on skateboards who go by me in corners. :driving:

Bob:

I know that I don't have to say this but, when you make these braces, just remeber that they are lefty/righty. I don't have any welding machinery so if you do this, cut and burn a pair for me. Thanks

Bob: Oh yea. The NAPA shocks are a special order and might take a week to come in from out west.

Al..... I know a guy...

As to the lefty and righty situation, Herman mentioned the same thing and said to just work one side at a time. And I can't make you up a set without having your car. Every car is a little bit different and they have to be custom fit. That's why Blind Moose doesn't supply them.

Bob:

That guy you know, I wonder who that is?

I asked Blind Moose about the braces when I ordered mine and he said the same thing about every car being a little diffrent. I think I said that in another board someplace.

I guess that I will mock up something and bend up what I need and have it welded.

I've never owned a TR6; but I'm puzzled by this disclaimer. Certainly it's true, but then again there are holes to be drilled to fit this brace. It certainly appears to me that any variation between frames could be easily covered by drilling the holes to match and/or repositioning the upper mount slightly where it attaches to the frame. In a really extreme case, you might need to add a washer to one of the new bolts through the frame, but even that would not affect the strength significantly.

Randall.....I agree that the variance shouldn't be that much between our cars and can only guess that someone buying the conversion with the extra bracket would expect that the bracket fit without any customer modifications required. I was thinking that the bracket could be built with slotted holes to allow for some of the variance and then, as you said, washers to make up for any other differences. My kit arrived a little while ago and I picked up a 3' section of angle iron at HD for $5. They could probably charge another $25 for the kit and brackets.

Perhaps I am missing something, Bob. Don't you have to drill holes in both the frame and the shock mount, to attach the extra bracket? Or are there existing holes that get reused?

Randall:

Right you are. Holes have to be drilled in both the frame and the shock mount. There are no existing holes. At least my Blind Moose kit from last year does not have holes.

I will not slot the holes either. I don't want any walking about down there. The idea, I think, is to give the shock mount and the brace no place to go.

I'm sure they could make/supply braces if they had a mind to, there is not that much variation and as stated you drill your own mounting holes.
Why make them if folks buy the product as is? I suspect they don't care as long as they make money and customers are willing to 'make the product right' themselves.

Pimp my TR.....?

I guess I have some other issues to sort out before I reach the point where I start looking for more work. But sure, it sounds fun all right.

would there be any concerns about drilling holes in the frame and compromising structural intergrity? given the location of the holes i would guess not, but something to think about?

Then what reinforces the holes in the frame? I'll assume one bolts all the way through the main rail? Does one then somehow reinforce that hole in the frame with a tube through which the bolt then goes? or perhaps weld a hardened washer onto the frame? or ?

Even though Hermann claims every car is different, it seems that brace would fit most every car, as long as you got to drill the holes individually anyway.

If I convert back to original shocks and springs, can I drop the brace?

Anders

Thanks for the great pics and posts. I have invested in the Blind Moose
as well and never quite appreciated the "brace" issue until this thread.
I'll be keeping it on watched topics for future reference. I wanna go
with the brace and avoid any headaches.
