blasted fuel gauge

I thought I had to switch the leads on mine when I switched to neg. grnd. but it's been a while so I may be wrong!

Going to check on everything tonight when the heater catches up. Everything is hooked up correctly, including the ground to the back of the gauge. It is neg ground-- Doesn't matter. It has to be an issue with the sending unit. It will probably require another tank pull to fix.

Checked for oil drops under the motor and found 1 dime size drop after two days of sitting. Must have taken that long for the oil to find its way down the bell housing to the drain hole.

Surely wish that was all I had.

Jack,

That's Miss Agatha's way of letting everyone know she is around. With Bugsy, he leave his 5 drop calling card wherever he goes. Since oil pan seems to be welded on I figured trying to remove and fix while in the car would prove to be potentially more trouble than it is worth. I finally decided to leave well enough alone. Cardboard is cheap.

I could check out some gauges and senders and calibrate them together with a new wire if anyone needs it. Its too cold outside to do much and I have a little time to do that kind of thing on the weekend now. Just pm me and I will see what I can do.

If the wire to the sender were bare and touched the metal of the car body or fuel tank somewhere then it would read empty. if the wire became open(disonnected) somewhere then it would read full. If the gauge is accurate and all, that is. The sender might have a problem but it can probably be fixed as it is pretty mechanical with a wiper running up and down a wire wound resistor. You need to drop the tank and check everything.

Not a really bad job Barry. Just a pain to have to do things twice. Next time check it with the tank out.

Agreed, Jack. And I have done all of the checking at least twice. This will be the third time the tank is out. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

Third is the charm you know. Seems I have done everything on Miss Agatha three times.

Or even more for me, Jack. Wouldn't be fun if it worked the first time now would it? Or would it? ;)Shoot, I guess everyone would be doing it if it were that easy.

One for fit, two for go, three for show.

If you want to send the the gauge and the sender I will check it out and calibrate them together as time allows me. I will even send a new wire to run from the tank sender to the gauge all checked out together, no charge except the shipping which is not bad us mail. They don't weigh much. Also if the tank is full of fuel, you can empty ti first the easy way. Take the fuel line loose at the carbs and add some extra hose on it and put that hose in a 5 gallon bucket, remove the hot wire from the ignition coil (to prevent burning up the points) then turn the switch on and let the fuel pump empty the tank into the bucket in a few minutes with no mess and then the tank will be nice and light to deal with. let me know, I wish I lived closer. Its been real cold here lately and I am almost done with my seats and I have a warm little room in my basement to work on electrical things on the weekends. Its how I relax in the winter.

Thanks Kim. You are very generous with your offer. I just need to build up the nerve to lay on the cold cement floor to pull the tank again. I will certainly let you know.

I would like to see that sender before you replace it.
Oh and if anyone else wants this, please PM me. If I get set up for it, might as well do a few.

yes, I know of the cold. It is miserable. I am waiting for warmth so I can mount the vinyl top fasteners. I might have to find someone with one of them bullet kerosene heaters and run it for a while to get the whole basement warm.

Replying to my own post again, but anyone needing me to calibrate a smiths gauge with a sender bugeye or later model either. I am going to set up a good 10v supply for those as well. Doesn't have to be just spridgets. I like accurate fuel gauges, running out sucks and its easy to do with a 7 gallon tank. Still bloody cold here. Was 10 this morning.
