Blasted computer viruses

Someone installed a some "malicious content" on my home computer :madder:
My anti-virus started sending me e-mail yesterday along with a reminder that I need to renew the license and more importantly access to the clean up software.... Well hopefully it will be clean in a few minutes.

Cleaned up and hopefully protected. I am using Prevex, which works by checking every file which starts up against a company data base, and registers any new file it detects, if it is spreading, where is was detected.... The only real problem is that it wants the internet to check every file which starts up so it adds a small delay. It does seem to pick up nasties faster than the other anti-viruses I use.

Glad you got control again.

Say, what was the name of the "malicious" thing, and what anti-virus were you running that allowed it to happen?

Thanks.
Tom

My Anit-virus subscription ran out, and I ignored it  .

What I am running (and have been using for several years is Prevex 3.0 ) https://www.prevx.com/ If I had paid up on time, the software would have also blocked the virus from being copied from my wife's disk on key to the computer.

The software continues monitoring the computer in real time and sent me an e-mail warning me that there was a problem with my computer. As soon as I paid it also cleaned up my hard drive.

The file it found was ESS[1].EXE

Acording to Prevex's database:

The filename ESS[1].EXE was first seen on May 17 2011 in the following geographical region of the Prevx community:

Israel on May 17 2011

ESS[1].EXE can also use the following file names:

12789246.EXE 1233521.EXE 1324089.EXE SUNMNE.EXE FWOAOF.EXE KEEGEQ.EXE

Apparently it also added something to the registry.

After scanning all of our disk on keys I believe that it came from the office computer at my wife's school.

Thanks. Just sent you a PM.
