Black Tar - Backer board

Hi All,
I am trying to source this lovely stuff that is used in various places in my 4A. This resembles black "poster" or mount board that seems to be partially saturated with a tar like substance which bonds the internal fibre makeup of the board itself. I'm replacing the carpet and the left and right kick panels that the carpet was glued to, in the foot wells, are sort of warped and sagged (not unlike the vehicle owner)
I hate the idea of replacing these with plastic but want a locally available fix if possible. Any suggestions?

Not the same material, but I would think a 1/8" hardboard (smooth on one side, textured on the other) would do very well. It's the stuff pegboard is made from.

The product used for matting pictures might also serve. It is about the right thickness and material... could easily be painted black. Place like Michael's or a framing shop will have sheets of the stuff.

Thanks be to all!
I stopped in and spoke to a local upholsterer, who happened to be originally from Manchester, about this.
He knew the exact stuff and said it was not available any more. He suggested and I bought, non drilled Masonite board (as per PerterK above) Smooth both sides 2 x 4 feet for $3.00 bucks. Any local hardware will have this in stock. I think that you can get quite a variety of thicknesses so those of you with shabby spare tire covers, take heart!
