Black Holes

As I have become to know my BJ8 better through 1 hour jobs that span days, I thought I had found the only black hole in that car. You know… that place where small nuts, screws and washers fall never to be seen or heard from again. The one I am most familiar with is the one that sucks up the air filter hardware as you try to attach or remove them.

Well … the other night, I found another. As I was removing the brass nuts that hold the exhaust down tubes to the manifold, I lost a washer. I know that if I were to weigh the car, it would not show any additional weight. It truly is a black hole!

Now, I am not a physicist, but I have heard a theory that things that drop into black holes eventually pop out of white holes. That being said, I wonder if the white holes are in Healeys or some other make of car, or maybe not a car at all. So, who is getting all of my lost hardware and small tools??? And, when will I start receiving someone else’s lost stuff???

In my quest for information, my questions to the group are:
- What other black holes should I be aware of?
- Has anyone seen a white hole or had extra hardware at the end of a project?
- Are there any physicists in the group who might be able to better explain this phenomenon?

Some of these parts may be poping up on my work bench. I always thought that they were left over from my projects. Its a relief to know that they could be from other peoples projects via a black hole.

Hi Mark,
Turns out I have a white hole in my parts cleaner bucket. Seems every time I reassemble carbs, engine, tranny etc. I have parts appear in the bucket after I’m done. I know that I put everything back together properly, those parts must have come from your car.

mark, i found a black hole on/in my car that had been gobbling up hardware since 1963, while replacing the horn that id rebuilt and painted i dropped a washer in a hole on the r/s fender brace that the horn is mounted to so i tapped a small magnet to a length of coat hanger and slid it down into the hole now i have enough fasteners to rebuild the entire r/s of a bj7, still some stuff down there i can hear it rattling around when i put the wire back in must be some stainless stuff, perhaps some of it is yours? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/savewave.gif

I starting to believe that car black holes don't end up in car white holes. I think there is crossing of hole types. My wife was saying this morning that we have a black hole in the clothes drier. Has anyone found any socks on their benches, in parts baskets, or in their car?

I know I have singularity the area around my grinder on the wire wheel side. It gobbles up things up so fast unless I hold on real tight .. sometimes things pop back out on the other side of the shop but usually not. There is also some mysterious relation of the black hole to my snap ring pliers but haven't figured that out yet.

I think you are right about the clothes drier. My wife often finds washers and other small parts in there which doesn't make her very happy. I will be glad to tell her about the black hole/white hole theory so she can stop blaming me!

Gentlemen,

In addition to the black holes... 'There be gremlins capt'n...'

The gremlins live in a workshop next to the car you are working on. When you set a part on a workbench freshly removed from or ready to reinstall in the car... the Gremlins will move the part to some obscure part of the shop, under other parts, or simply bury it outside never to be found again....

Combined with the black holes it drives a man to drink.. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thirsty.gif

Maybe it's the drinking causing the gremlins. I notice that the gremlin activity increases with more shop guests and beer!

Mark....

Ahhhh... yep, that's the ticket... I think you are on to something.. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Mayhaps some of the shop guests ARE the gremlin and their pockets are the black holes. Any buddies getting their cars done more quickly than you?

Darwin,

I did install a metal detector in my garage for guests to pass through on their way out.... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

I should read more. If only I had known about the phenomenon of white holes, then the discovery (by my wife) of a sideshift gearbox casing and cover in the dishwasher very early one Sunday morning would have had a plausible explaination. It left me baffled for weeks. Is the white hole presence linked to the ‘Near Death Experience’ that I had shortly after?

Mark--

It is a well-known fact that socks gone missing in clothes dryers become left-over hangars in clothes closets.

I hadn't heard that... I will need to check the closet.

Don't waste your time they are not in the closet either.----Keoke
