BJ8 Wiper motor removal

Time has come to make my wiper motor self park again !!

If I remove the nut surrounding the rack cable is it possible to remove the motor unit complete with gearbox leaving the rack assembly still on the vehicle? From the workshop manual it's not clear to me how the end of the cable rack is secured to the cross-head, but they must come apart as they are available as separate spare parts.

I don't want to start pulling it apart and find I spoil something by unding the wrong bit /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Dave, thanks for the reference.

Looking at the parts book rather than the workshop manual makes it looks much more obvious - should have done that first I suppose !

As I understand it, the unit has a permanent 12v feed and the operating wire provides an earth return via the switch, which is in parallel with the park switch which is closed at all points except the park position?

Andrew

In reference to the park switch you are correct. Very simple, very elegant.

Good luck with the necessary contortions involved in removing the motor without removing the rack. It can be done; I have done it!

I have just finished a complete overhaul (the second rewind worked Dave) of my wiper system. It is very easy to remove the rack and makes working on the system very easy. You will end up working more and being very frustrated trying to just take the motor out. I am very up on this whole system at this time feel free to ask any questions.

So do you recommend pulling the rack cable and motor out as a unit ?

When I looked back at the first post I see you have a BJ8, so I would think that you have more dash board stuff in the way this would be the only problem in removing the whole rack. After you loosen\take off the bezel pieces on the wiper shafts the rack drops right out, this frees everything up and makes getting the motor out a snap. With the rack out you can clean up the two little gear boxes and the cables and relube everything this is not a bad job. Once the motor is out check back in and we will go thru the motor R and R. If the heater and the console are in the way at least loosen the bezels and drop the rack down in the dash to give you play in the assembly. You may also want to unhook the battery while doing this job.

I did take for granted that you knew that you have to remove the cover on the top of the motor gear box to remove the C clip that holds the cable in place along with the easy to see out side tube nut.

Job done and dusted and working fine now - no doubt my body will be back to normal in a week or two after the contortions it's been through !

Yes BJ8 with loads of dash hamper <g> In the end I pulled the rack cable out of the wiper gear boxes leaving them in situ - almost impossible to get at them under the dash. Problem was a broken parking wiper contact. I had intended to just replace the whole unit with a rebuilt one, but when I went to SC Parts they only had them with the big wheel and crank missing. I ended up replacing the big wheel and contact as a unit as it was in better condiditon than mine - also did the brushes while it was out. Absolute pain to put back - turns out the 'shelf' that it bolts to is a welded on one in my BJ8 - (I understand some screw on) but of course I had all the trim out before I found out /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

An oddity - my parts book implies that the big wheel should have a crank offset giving 120 degrees of wiper travel, and indeed the original was marked up 120. The new one was marked 130 degrees - so I did some careful measurements and decided it would infact cover the screen better. Now it's all back together the wipers park fine and sweep without fouling anything - but why the different parts ???

Contortions is the perfect desciption. I was sore for a day afterwards. My shelf was also welded in place. The first time I took out just the motor then discovered about taking out the rack. Of course I have a BT7 and the Heater box is out giving lots of room. Glad to hear you got everything working. That was a good deal that you found some parts as the wiper motor and gearbox do not seem to be very available. Side note With encouragement from Dave R I hand rewound my field coil for the wiper motor, for those wondering it can be done and it works.
