My BJ8 windows severely rattle and are next to impossible to roll up .I have put new plastic window guides and lubricated the track and window assembly. After I did this things were some better for about 2 weeks .Although I still had the rattle. Now especially on driver side takes 3 men and a boy to get the window raised.I would be very thankful for any info or suggestions on this. Thanks,Jeff

HI Jeff, Inside the door are a set of screws that allow you to adjust the window track.Perhaps they have loosened since you reinstalled the window. On the otherhand, it might be that the tracks that the glass slides in may require a bit of bending to fit the curvature of the glass. Also be sure you have adequately lubricated the winder gears too. In any case do not put excessive load on the window glass as they are easily broken if you do so.---Fwiw---Keoke

Hi Jeff,

Welcome to the BCF! (I noted that this was your first post.) As a start point you might do a search on this site for past discussions on the subject. I'm not sure if there have been any (it's likely though), but it's a good general practice in any case.

I've got a BJ8 that also needs an overhaul of the window slides and operating mechanism, and although at the moment that's not near the top of the projects list for the car, I'll be interested in what you turn up.

Good luck, and again, welcome to the Fourm. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

jeffsbj8,replacing the 'plastic guides' was a good start however there are several other things that can account for these problems, get the effected window/windows all the way down into the door, get someone to begin cranking it up as you stand over it looking straight down on the top edge of the window,as it begins to come up check the front and rear edges see if one edges catches in the track tilting the window glass either frontwards or backwards binding the glass panel, this is attributed to the 'plastic'glides most of the time, however, the metal track that the bottom of the glass panel fits into sometimes does not come up 'rise'evenly, allowing the window to jam,for this youll have to 1-make sure the window is secured and tight in this track,2 -check the rivet that connects the lifter arm,[thats the one that connects the regulator to the track the bottom of the window sits in] is not rusted, broken or missing,3-check the regulator cranking mechenism'make sure all the gears [teath]line up correctly, those gears are very thin and if at any time in the past had been "tweeked"hammered on to correct any problem of allignment, well your pretty much gunna have to replace it,i have also found, and keoke has also mentioned that you may even have to bend the correct arch[curve]in the front main track that the 'vent window'is attatched to,in order for the glass to follow it with the least amount of resistance, also make sure all the hardware, scews washers etc are installed correctly, some of the holes that the screws that hold the regulators to the door frame are often elongatted not permitting the internal mechinism to be alligned from the get go even if all else is correct.it takes alot of time to find out were they should be.i would not hesitade to employ various shims, washers, clips,or anything else that will help align these components up,the judges aint gunna see em once the door panels on.but also remember they realy never worked well from the start as new,so if you get them to the point that you can dismiss one of the other men or at least the boy, your on the right path,anthony7777 1963 bj7 M.K.II you should 'search' this topic here as well!good luck. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif

Hi Jeff, and welcome. I found two problems with my BJ8 window tracks. First the curve did not follow the glass. Second, the track channel space was not consistant, got thinner in two areas. I did end up taking the units out of the door to work on. With the help of a friend, we got the curve to mimic the window. Then from my socket set, I found a socket that would fit the channel. Rolling it down the channel showed me where it got pinched. We fixed those, checked the window guides, cleaned and greased the gears. Now it doesn't take two hands, or in your case, 3 men and a boy to wind up. Good luck with your windows.
