BJ8 window crank mechanism installation.

According to the books there is a right and left hand window winder mechanism. They look identical to me. I installed mine so that the spring tension helps roll up the window. Is the direction of the spring tension the only difference? Thanks and have a good day!

John, I'm honestly not sure. But I know some years ago when I reinstalled the crank mechanisms on my vette, I accidentilly let the spring slip in its mounting and the tension was so tight that I never did get it back where it belonged for the longest time. During that period that I used the car and that window that way, you could put two hands flat on the closed window on the outside of the vehicle and push the window down. Not much security for a locked car huh. So I believe the spring tension, which is quite strong keeps the window up.
So if you ever want to steal a car, check first to see it the windows can be slid down from the outside. It might save you alot of work.

Yes, install the springs so they are assisting in raising the window glass. It makes a big difference in the amount of effort needed to work the mechanism to raise the glass.

just checked the boxes in the garage, as you look at the mechanism, the tail end of the spring that hooks on the upright bracket is located so that the u of the spring is at the bottom on both doors. Hope that makes sense.

I remember that there is an error in the picture in the BJ8 parts book. the picture is wrong such that you might install with the spring assisting the lowering of the window. Just do what makes sense to make the spring help you lift it.
