BJ8 shifter spring install

Does anyone know any tips for installing the shifter spring on a center shift gearbox? I have been fighting mine for about two hours, and just cant seem to get the spring compressed enough to install the retaining clip. Seems like it might be easier if I had three hands.

I haven't tried it, but you might be able to compress the spring on the bench and wrap some wire around it, to be cut when you've got the snap ring in place. Otherwise, I've done this a few times and, yeah, it's frustrating but can be done. IIRC, there's a washer between the spring and the snap ring, and don't forget the nylon cup that goes into the shift rail.

You can wire the split ring ends closer and find an exhaust pipe connector, or another cylinder that fits in the opening. Stack the parts and push down, then snip the wire. Tap the split ring with a drift to make sure it is seated all around.
