BJ8 Resistry

Here's an assignment for you; I have in my possession the owners manual (MK I-II w/BJ7 suppliment, somewhat weathered, but still intact) and the original bill of sale for HBJ7L-932*. See if you can come up with the cars/owners in the range of 9320 - 9329, and if you hit on the missing digit, you can put that owner in contact with me. I know your specialty is the BJ8, but surely you cross boundaries sometime ;)

Randy, I checked with Tom Blaskovics, BJ7 Registrar, but he has no record of any BJ7 from HBJ7L/19320 through HBJ7L/19329. I'm sure Tom would be interested in adding the information from the original documents to the BJ7 Registry, if you would contact him: tomkayb@comcast.net.

Last week, an owner in France was finally able to establish the true identity of his car, which has been registered with an incorrect VIN for the last 20 years. The registry provided advice on where to find the appropriate evidence, and some guidance on how to get the car re-registered with its correct number.
Effectively, i think it's my car ;)
First, i send informations on my car to be added to the registry with all the number i have, includind the wrong vin number which is in my official french registration paper.
Steve indicate me that my VIN number must be incorrect with the caracteristics of my car (shrould lights not separate that don't be good with the VIN number, etc...) .
With the motor and body number, Steve find a VIN number that must be the one of the car, number that we confirmed with the number on the shock tower.
Actually, i try to modify the VIN number on my registration certificate, but it's not so easy in french... Maybe i can do the change, maybe not but now, thanks to steve, I know the correct VIN number of my car and I know that the engine goes with the body and the only inconsistency is the VIN number

Steve was very helpful to identifiate that, to inform me that my engine number plate and body number plate were certainly original one (but also the VIN plate with not the good VIN number for my car).
I find also that this will be very interesting to know more of other cars, but i find also that if the numbers where available for everyone, it will be very easy to remake some matching numbers cars with numbers that are not identify actually. So, I prefer someone (and Steve was/is very helpful with me and my car with wrong number) to give information when the request rather than everything available and I would not have saved my car if everyone could have the information on the net...

there is not necessarily a perfect solution but this one can at least ensure that the information shall not be public

Aw, go ahead Randy get a BJ8 with rollup windows you won't miss the discomforts and the hassle of side screens.

Doug
Perhaps, once my hearing finally goes__those windows rattling around in the doors would drive me crazy (er, crazier...); a loud exhaust can over cover up so much.

As for the hassle, I'm more likely to forget where they are__they haven't been on the car since I rolled it off a transport truck fourteen (14) months ago... :angel2:

Just in case there was any doubt, your friendly neighborhood Moderator is on duty and hoping that we won't come any closer to personal squabbling here than we have already. This forum is particularly well-behaved, and thank you all again for that.

To add my two pence to the discussion, it seems to me that the main reason for guarding the privacy of the information in any given registry is not so much an exaggerated sense of security on the part of the registrars, but is more due to an exaggerated sense of privacy on the part of many owners. Some people seem to think it is a profoundly personal and private piece of information that they own such-and-such a BJ8 or other car, and if they believe that that information would be available online, or that a registrar were giving it out freely, they would not register their cars at all.

Personally I think that a lot of people suffer from an exaggerated idea of the sensitivity of their car's VIN or other identifying information - I mean, it's not like your Social Security number of safe deposit box key pattern - but I don't get to decide how sensitive others should be, so there we are. As a side note, have you ever noticed how so many people advertising a car for sale will blur or cover their license plate number? I have never understood what mischief they think that others may commit with the information - after all, every one of the hundreds or thousands of people who sees their car when they are out driving it can clearly see the license plate number - but apparently there is some widespread belief that some bad consequence will follow posting photos online of their car with its license plate visible.

Nice comments - agreeing or disagreeing - are always welcomed here.
I agree, and although I'm not consistant in my actions, I have sometimes obscurred the image of the license plate when I post a picture of a car I'm working on, just in case the owner is sensitive about it. If it's a personal/vanity plate, well then I figure they already wanted to show it off!

On another matter, sending you a PM, for a favor...

Just an FYI, the AHCA 100 Registry operates within the same guidelines as Steve and the BJ8 Registry. Steve was a great help when I was asked by Rich (Chrysler) a year ago to continue the 100 Registry.

Kind of late now but figured I would put in my 2 cents worth. Few years ago I purchased a BJ8 that was going to fix up and sell and the vin on the state DMV was totally bonkers as well as the actual firewall vin tag. Know idea where it came from although guessed some other vintage Brit car made my BMC. Steve was a huge help to me in figuring out the correct vin number through both his knowlegde of where to look for it on the front shock mount as well as going over his records. The vin stamped on the shock tower was pretty legible and Steve was able to narrow it down based on cars he already had registered and pics I sent him of the shock tower stamping. I purchased a Heritage certificate and that along with Steve's info allowed me to go to the DMV and get it properly registered with the correct vin number - normally an impossible task with a state DMV. He did this all at no cost to me and was a great resource. We all need to offer our thanks to anyone who takes on the task of being a particular Healey model registrar as they sure as h... don't get paid for it !!!
Regards,
Mike
