BJ8 oil pressure too high?

Hello all,

My engine has 75K miles on it. Hot idle pressure was around 15 psi and hot running was around 40 psi. I had the rocker shaft rebuilt and the hot idle went up to 25 psi and the hot running pressure was up to 45 psi. I replaced the pressure relief spring with no change.

I just shimmed the spring up by .120". Now cold idle is at 55 psi. Cold running is up to 65-70 psi with keeping the RPMs below 3000. Hot idle is at 35 psi at 700 rpm. Hot running is 55-60 psi.

My question: Is the cold running pressure of 65-70 psi too high? I have read that it should top out at 60 psi. It runs this way for about 10 minutes and then stays below 60 psi.

Thanks,
Mark

It might be a little too high. Higher than needed will put more strain & wear on the drive. I doubt if it is enough too high to cause problems. If it bothers you, try a .100" shim in place of the .120".
