BJ8 identification?

I have ordered a new carpet set for my BJ8 and I have had a few queries regarding the model type? Is it a Phase 1 or 2?
This also cropped up a few weeks back when I was ordering engine parts. Can anyone confirm please?

Engine number is - 29K RU

Body tag 1 - 3184BJ8 72.119

Body tag 2 - HBJ8L 27316

The body has the single indicator light under the headlight (as Ph1) but I have been told that the chassis number indicates Ph2?
Maybe I have mix of both?

" One method" is to look at the chassis rails at the rear axel. If they are routed down under the axel instead of being straight it is a phase 2.

The phase 1 has a pan hard rod running parallel to the rear axle while the phase 2 has bars on either side running along the sides. This difference makes the carpets different.

It is confusing if you think that the difference between phase 1 and phase 2 is all about the single or two lights under the headlight.
... It is not about those lights ...
The difference between phase 1 and 2 is all about the differences in the rear suspension as others have stated.
....
All cars with two lights under the headlights are all phase 2
BJ8s,
All cars with one light under the headlights are NOT all
phase 1 BJ8s. Some with one light under the headlight are
phase 2 BJ8s. I have one like yours. Single light but it is a phase 2 BJ8. # 30988

Many thanks, it seems I was fed false information regarding the single lights indicating a phase 1. Looks like I have a phase 2.

I am also about to fit a pair of rear, side, interior trim panels. My car has 2 threaded studs on each side fixed to the interior side of the rear wheel arch. The second hand panels I have obtained do not have fixing holes to accommodate these studs. Is there a difference to this fixing between a PH 1 and PH2?

Your relatively early Phase 2 will have the two studs per side and there should be holes in the rear quarter trim panels to accomodate these. Once fitted they would have flat chrome washers and chrome acorn nuts same as on the front seat pivots to anchor shoulder belts.
You may have picked up some late Phase 2 rear panels that instead of the two studs, had one single large internally threaded boss sticking out, the panel should then have the single large hole to accomodate. A plastic cup and escutcheon would fit over this if not used for shoulder belts.
If there are no holes in the trim panel then they are wrongly done aftermarket repros.

Rich,

thanks for that. It looks like I have repro units as they dont have holes, just the square plate that takes the fold down seat bolt.
I assume I could just punch holes in to make them fit onto the 2 studs.
