BJ8 Hot Starting Problem

If the starter is turning the engine at a fast enough speed but it just wont fire I would suspect a vapour lock issue . The heat build up once the engine is off boils the fuel in the line and the pump doesnt have the balls to overcome the vapour pressure with the ignition on . Next time it happens jump out pop the hood and pull the fuel line of the carbs . Direct it away from anything hot(preferably direct it into an old soft drink can, water bottle etc etc ) and have someone turn the ignition on for a couple of seconds, if all you get its spits and farts of bubbles and not a steady stream of fuel then you have your answer . If it spits and farts let it become a steady fuel stream turn of the ignition, reconnect the fuel line and see if it starts .
Had the same problem with my 67 , got the rad recored with an extra pass for more cooling , problem solved .

Update on the hot start problem....

It was the mixture that was too rich! Obviously helps with a cold start but can stifle a hot one! After seeing an article in this month's Practical Classics magazine they go over common starting problems, both hot and cold. The mixture being too rich was mentioned amongst the others as most prominent. It didn't take much unscrewing of the jet adjusting screw to make a BIG difference. Thanks to all for the help!

Scot, replace the cable from the starter to the solenoid. More than once I've seen this cable corrode from the inside out. You can usually tell be peeling back some of the black rubber and exposing the wires, also by twisting the cable and listen for the telltale "crunch" from within the cable.

I had this exact problem on my 69 Sprite many years ago. Car would start and run fine, shut it off and it wouldn't turn over and start, and then after sitting for a while it would mysteriously start and run fine again...drove me crazy trying to figure it out. Eventually I removed and disassembled the starter and found a poorly insulated hot wire dangerously close to a grounded surface. Apparently when the car had been running and the starter got hot the wire grounded out. Wire replaced or wrapped with elec tape, I don't recall which...problem solved.

Last time I drove my 65 BJ8 it was running fine until it abruptly wasn't like the key had been switched off....and came home on a flatbed tow truck. I'll be sorting this out later this evening. This happened twice before and the problem was a bad coil...

Thanks for the update. I had a similar issue when something got under the float valve needle on one of the carbs and it would flood the engine.
