BJ8 Hood Brace - Glued or Not

64 BJ8, hood has a brace that runs side to side near the windshield. Body shop can not tell if it should be glued to the skin. PO's, may have done some work to it. Seems to be worked on. Body shop asks, what to do. Clean out all the stuff that is in between the brace and the edges, and leave it, or apply the correct bonding material.

Should any part of that brace be bonded to the skin? As in the front or back leading edges, or in the middle so that it will not be seen?

I just took a look at my 64 BJ8, and while I can't attest to its purity, the cross member at the windshield end of the hood appears to float across the hood and be attached at the sides with 3 spot welds on each side where it bends to meet the sides of the hood. It also has a bend across the back (windshield side), but it didn't appear to be welded or otherwise glued. Across the front and body the cross member, it's slightly off the hood, and not attached.

HI ASUMHLY, There were two pads located ~6 3/4" inboard of each side of the hood and are ~ 3 3/4" long.If they have compressed over time the gap will be on the order of 1/8". To the best of my knowledge they were glued to the brace only.---Fwiw--Keoke
 
My BJ8 is a later one. It has nothing but welds around the edge to hold the inner supporting framework. There is no glue. I do not believe such adhesives were available then, and none of the restoration references (Anderson & Moment, Clausager) I've consulted mention its use.
 
As always, thank you guys for looking at your healeys, checking the references and taking the time to reply. I'll tell the body shop to clean out all the adhesive. Cheers, Roger
