I can not answer for the BJ8 but my BJ7 has a tapping on the inside of the RH chassis rail just below the point at which the sloping section of the footwell lands on the top of the rail. I can not see any reason for it to change on the BJ8. One end is bolted there and the other goes to the engine back plate using one of the nuts and bolts for the connection of the bell housing to the back plate, it may even have been to one of the bolts holding the starter, the length of the strap will determine which bolt set to use as there has to be slack in the strap. I have taken mine off some weeks ago and now you have me thinking. Ha ha ha - bugger!.
After reading Jeff Schlemmer's postings on an MG forum linked in an earlier thread, I spoke with him and he stressed the importance of having as many as 3 ground straps. Proper grounding is necessary for the life of the coil, evidently. My stock ground strap (per Andy's picture) is pretty deteriorated.
My starter has been turning slowly with a relatively new battery, so I added this additional ground strap and the starter improved noticeably: It's near the distributor so should help that as well.
When I get my replacement stock ground strap, if it will reach, intend to attach it to the lower starter bolt as visible in Andy's photo.
