BJ8 gearlever slop

My BJ8 has been running well until this morning. I came out of the garage using reverse, no problem. I set off on a long run only to find no overdrive but being in traffic left it until later when going to fill up with gas. I found i needed to reverse, oops, no reverse gear. The gearlever moves much further to the left than it should so misses reverse. After playing around at the pump I found out I could get reverse by going less than the full distance to the left with the lever till I found the way into the reverse gate so I have all four forward plus reverse available but no OD. I checked to the output of the OD relay, voltage is going to the 3/4 gear switch on the box but that seems to not be working. I had to continue running because I had 400 miles to do today which is now done but I have the same distance to do tomorrow. I assume the selector mechanism has come loose in some way and whatever should operate the OD 3/4 switch isn't operating it. Can anyone tell me what it is likely to be that has come ou t of alignment on theshifter. All forward gears are where they should be, reverse is available but not against the stop and there is no OD cos the solenoid doesn't get voltag. 2nd question, can I bypass the 3/4 switch so long as I am sure never to leave it in OD when I try to get reverse, How easy is it to get to the 3/4 switch wires/

Sounds like the problem in "BJ8 OD disengages in third"

I think it is eather the switch, or the plastic cup at the bottom of the lever or the spring under the grommet that holds the lever down.

The increased distance may be the result of the switch breaking of
There you might need to take the spring out. Putting it back needs some tooling
Find a lid from a jam jar that fits the ring, on top a piece of pipe and use the nut on top of the lever. The circlip can be compressed with a tierap

I'm working from memory--haven't had this apart in a while--but the selector lever works in a 'ball-and-socket' mechanism (like a hip joint). The ball is retained by a set screw in a groove in the ball; if this set screw is loose or missing you could get the symptoms you described. I think if the nylon cup was missing you'd get generally sloppy(er) gearshift lever action.

Your so right about the two bolts

Before you take the spring out, check if you can reach the bolts from the outside. The spring is a PITA to put back in.
