BJ8 Distributor Drive Position

Hi everyone,
I am new to BCF and in loking through the past messages, there is a ton of great knowledge floating around! I have had my current BJ-8 for ~18 years but it have only just recently really gotten it back on the road again after lots of electrical, gearbox and wheel problems.

I am trying to get it proerly timed now and have run into a fouling condition with the vacumn line and the oil filter head. I have the point dwell set to 35 degrees but now I cannot rotate the distributor far enough to get to 35 degree BTDC before the vacumn advance bulb hits the oil filter head. I suspect the distributor drive dog off the cam is a tooth or two off and therefore the distributor advance is artificailly biased towards the filter towards the filter.

I have the shop manual that says the drive dog can be simply removed with a 5/16 UNF bolt. Does anyone know if there are any washers that have to be secured when the dog is revomed or can I really just extract the drive and re-install it in the "22" position in the car without pulling the oil pan?

Thanks for any help!

You really can just pull up the drive gear and rotate it to the correct position.

With the #1 plug removed and your finger plugging the hole, rotate the engine until PPPHHTTT (sound eminating from cylinder) and stop at TDC.

Then you can set the drive gear at the "twenty to two" position.

the repositioning of the drive in the block. However, it is necessary to note that this position can be correct or it can be 180 Deg out. This is because the slot is not centered in the driver and the offset is matched on the tang of the distributor. Consequently, the 20-to-2 position must also insure that the wide part of the off set slot face the engine block when the 20-to-2 position is set up.--Fwiw--Keoke

Thanks for the help! I appreciate it.

Another TDC method:(there should be a mark on crankshaft pulley and pointer on timing case that when lined up indicate TDC) but in case that is not there, hold a screwdriver so the tip rests against top of piston, whilst rotating engine (3rd gear and hand on top front tire [ignition off!])feel for maximum upward movement on piston. If you need 2 hands to move car, hold screwdriver in teeth (if concourse car put towel down to catch slobber dripping from mouth). You can be 180deg off with this method so must be integrated with finger in plug hole to make sure you are on compression stroke which adds a certain erotic kick to whole procedure.
