BJ8 dash top redo?

I am about to restore/redo the dash top on my BJ8. The prior owner decided he liked the look of it with 2" foam! Me, not so much. Question is how thick/what density was the original foam? I have already fabricated a new piece of the wood and attached the front original wood edge. Any help would be great. I have an upholstery stapler and the needed spray adheasive.

The thickness was about 1/4" and it was pretty soft foam.
