I have to repair the console on my 64 BJ8 due to PO installation of a radio. I need the dimensions of a standard blanking plate hole including the two holes on the sides and a reference to the hole centerline from the top of the console or some other location. What is the difference between the phase 1 and phase 2 chrome console finisher strips,are they interchangeable? Does anyone sell a pattern to make new wood dash set? Thanks for any help.

Hi John,
Hopefully someone can give exact dimensions for placement. If you have an original radio you can get the three hole sizes and relative placement. Here’s the best photo I have of the console for my '67 to give you a ballpark. I used the original dash pieces as a template to cut new ones. You can see them in the background. I used Baltic Birch plywood to make them, very rigid.

Hi John, the difference in the two console fininshing strips is; the phase 1 items are longer. Consquently, they are not interchangeable---Keoke
 
Victoria British catalog has the phase 1 style strips so I will try to get them. From GregW's picture it looks like the console had some padding under the covering. Is this origional? Thanks for your help and have a good day!

Yes John, there was a very thin~1/8" pading used on the face but which should end just below the bottom of the radio cutout.However, the sides use about twice that much padding which extends all the way to the armrest attachment point---Keoke

Also from GregW's picture it looks like the sides were covered separately from the rest of the console. Also from your description the horizontal portion of the console had no padding. Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it and have a good day!

Hi John,
Yes, the sidepieces were separate from the front facing vinyl. The seams are hidden by stainless trim. You can see the indentation along the edge of the vinyl in the picture above for their location. I think you’re correct about no foam around the gear shifter, but I can’t remember for sure. I went in a slightly different direction when redoing my dash/ console. I did keep the stainless trim though. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Your consloe looks great! I can see now that the Phase I cars conslole is longer. Did you use solid wood or venir? Do you still have your origional wood dash pieces that you could possibly make a pattern from. I have concerns that the PO that made mine was not very careful. When I see pictures like these it makes me realize how far I have to go before I will be driving the car. It is a good thing this is fun! Thanks and have a good day!

Hi John,
Thanks, doing the steering wheel was quite a chore. The dash is Baltic birch with a Lacewood veneer. The steering wheel and shifter knob are solid Lacewood. The glove box door is a mahogany plank with Lacewood veneer on both faces. The reason for doing that was easier grain matching. If you’ve never used it, Baltic Birch is fantastic. The ½” sheet you’ll need has nine layers instead of the usual three or five, very strong. I’m pretty sure you won’t find it at Home Depot. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonod.gif I bought mine at a hardwood store.
I do have the original dash. I may be able to make a template tomorrow at work. PM or email me with your address.
