bj8 brakes

Hello,
my bj8 requires brake "pumping", ... teh first pedal stroke goes to the bottom, with the second stroke more pressure appears in the pedal, and in the third pedal stroke it breaks.
¿possible causes?

Hi Jose,

Is this a new problem or has it been building up? The first thing I would try is to bleed the brakes. A lot of air in the lines would cause these symptoms. But if you have air, then you must have run the reservoir low on fluid and the car does not normally "use" brake fluid. If you need to add brake fluid regularly, then you must be leaking fluid from somewhere. If you have leaks, you would want to take care of them first.

True enough. Check all along the lines where they connect to stuff, like the master cylinder, the calipers and the brake cylinders...

Or maybe Dar100,You want to look in the rear view miror as you motor off to see if a cloud of white smoke might be following you.---Keoke- /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/yesnod.gif

Another potential source for leaks is the power brake booster. Fluid can leak into the vacuum chamber, and you would not see it on the outside. So if you're losing fluid, with no visible leak, that's a prime suspect. When I took mine off during the rebuild, there was about a cup of brake fluid in it.

Wot!! Cutlass, didn't you notice the cloud of white smoke following you around ? or maybe you had a vacuum leak in the hose.---Keoke- /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

The cloud of white smoke gets lots of attention. Sometimes more than just the car itself. I had one guy ask if I was on fire!

Keoke, with as much as was wrong with that car, there's no telling what all was wrong. I bought it to restore, and drove it very little before disassembly. Good thing, as the frame was scary. Block was cracked from one end to the other, neither radius rods or panhard, etc. Good news is that today, three years into the restoration, I took the running, restored and painted chassis, with all electrical and hydraulics, to some local, very trusted folks for a good checkout before taking it to the body shop. Body panels are stripped, primed, and ready for the fine work of making it beautiful again.
