BJ8 boil point?

Today we've had temperatures which for us in the UK are rather hot 31 deg C - now my BJ8 is fitted with the fancy plastic fan and even if moving slowly keeps to an indicated 190 - 195 F on the dial.

BUT we got stuck in the midst of some charity fun run in Blackheath with nose to tail traffic, crawling at less than walking pace. Gauge creeps up to 212 - never mind it's a pressurised sytem - water will boil higher than that thinks I. Eventually the gauge goes practically full scale - 230 F and yet nothing happens. I'm expecting the rad cap to blow and loose water yet we survive. Then the traffic block clears and off we go and the gauge comes back into civilised territory.

But what IS the boil over temperature? IIRC the cap is arround 7psi and assume we're at sea level as we virtually are in London ??

230F is the approximate boiling point without anti-freeze for a 7 pound cap.

Andrew,
my BJ8 sat 212 deg on the way to Le Mans this year for a long time and I was worried, but 230!!! I think it must have been pretty near to bursting. My standard temp is like yours about 190, and I still have the original belt driven fan.

andrewmawson, did you "burp" anything out the overflow tube? you might have a bad cap or a false reading of the guage, id warm up the engine remove the cap and check the temp against a thermometer in the fill tank and check it against the guage reading, ive also had this problem seems to have been fixed by the instalation of a 6 bladed stainless fan, correct tension on the fan belt, and the use of "water wetter" solution. when i first got my car a year ago it overheated on me but blew the ra., hose before the cap let go.i also removed the thermostate i dont care what anyone else says the engine will run cooler without it and without damaging anything least that has been my findings with any car ive ever owned that ran hot, and oh ya all of the ten healeys ive had. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

HEY GUYS!

Some folks just slow you know, they ruin ten healeys and still don't get the message.---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

keoke like i said i dont care what enyone else has to say about "thermostates" stuff like "ah itll take longer to heat up the engine" what ya in a hurry? put a restrictor in if ya think ya need somthin in the opening at least that wont fail on ya or just put it back in the winter!end of subjesct, thanks for the info on volvo wire release bearings looks like itll work just fine, see atch. on that subject, funny thing about those other 10 healeys for some reason i got alot more money for em when i sold them and that was pre- tanner hype build up.i dont think that bloke was even born yet. ya he does very nice work. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

The water temperature gage may show cooler. This just means that the coolant is not removing as much heat from the engine. Internal parts of the engine are almost certainly running hotter. "Damaging anything" is sort of subjective.
