BJ7 Starter part number

Could someone with a 1962/1963 BJ7 please look and see what model Lucas starter is installed on their car? The "Austin" part number is 13H 837 but I need the LUCAS part number.

Also there is a date stamp above the "12V" stamping that should say month year; ex: "6 1962".

The LUCAS part number should be stamped on the housing and could be something like: M35G, M45G, M325G or M418G. BTW that LUCAS part number is also the diameter of the starter; ex: M35G means the diameter of the starter is 3 1/2 inches.

I need one as the PO installed a 1954 M418G model on my car and I'm not sure it's the correct size.

Thanks to all reviewing.

13H837 be the part number Johnny--Keoke

I do not remember that number and my spares are packed away. However, if my memory serves me right any one under 4" in diameter would be the wrong one for a six cylinder car.

The starter on my 64 ph1 BJ8 is 25578A and M418G. My date is 1-64. That however is the same starter used in the BJ7's.

johnny, out of my 63 bj7, lucas 22530b 10 62. next line just below c45pv6 lo 12v. line below that. made in england. hope this helps.

Sorry Anthony but I think the photo and text you listed are for the generator. I need same info for the starter. Really, just the LUCAS number M xxx G.
Oh, BTW, the C45pv6 means the diameter of the generator is 4 1/2 inches and the "v" in pv means "vane included".

johnny, how embarrassing! sorry i picked the wrong one from the floppy disk, ok heres the real thing, 255551 7, next line, m418g p90 12v, next line made in england. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif

Thanks Anthony, that's exactly what I need to know. I suspected the large diameter starter was probably right.

Now, I just need to find one for sale.

Thanks again to all who responded. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cheers.gif

Yes, please do and try and find one. I've had no luck here. Am willing to trade my 100/4 BN1 model if interested. That has to be pretty rare. Contact me off line if you can locate one.

johnny, please find it within your heart to forgive "keoke", at this time of year hes a bit rattled with having the responsibility as my "business manager" of also having to file my taxes. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rolleyes.gif - ill look into the starter this morning and let you know by tonight. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/savewave.gif

Thanks for looking Anthony. If you turn the starter in your photo CCW you should see the date stamp just above the "12V".

Interesting, the BN1 starter (1954) I have is also a M418G but with a LUCAS part number of 25521.

The LUCAS reference manual I have lists two specs for the M418G starter which makes it important to get the date at least approximate.

johnny, i spoke to john at sports an classics this morning hes got the starter you need $189.99 plus about $15.00 shipping, heck require a core exchange and said hed take your bn4 starter or make other arrangements speak to him for details. Thanks for your help Anthony. But now I'm not so sure about the numbers. I found a local car that has similar numbers to mine and it is a '62 BT7. His Lucas part number is 25527D (and what I thought was a date stamp) of "9 55". My numbers are 25521D and "6 54". Both are M418G starters.

I mean what are the chances of two cars made the same year having such old starters? The Lucas Service manual I have only shows parts from 1965 - 1976. Perhaps someone has a manual from earlier years. I suppose it is likely these numbers I thought were "dates" could mean entirely something else.

I'd really like to hear from others with a '61 to '63 car. Please respond with your numbers which are stamped on your starter.

Thanks so much.

The Moss cat. lists starters 25521 B-D for the BN1, BN2, BN4, & BN6; and starters 25578 A-B for the BN7, BT7, BJ7 & BJ8 although the atarters through MOss are listed as NA. Page 88 in the latest cat.

Thanks Shorn. Forgot to check the old MOSS catalog. Surprised they listed the LUCAS part numbers. Better get a set of brushes before they run out. They already show the bushings as NA, and those really do wear out! Still doesn't say whether they are date stamped however. There's a lot of Lucas M418G starters available. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/confused.gif

Johnny,
As I posted earlier, my 1964 BJ8 was date stamped 1 64. The car was built April 1-13, 1964, so the 1 64 seems to correctly correspond.
