bj7 correct oil

I have a bj7. I live in iowa where summer temperature averages between 70-90 degrees. What is the correct weight of oil to use? I have been told at auto parts store to use 10-40. Is this appropriate?

What is the condition of your engine? If it is freshly rebuilt with tight (on spec) clearances 10-40 would be fine. If it is well worn (100,000 miles) like mine, I use 20w-50.

I would recommend a 30 weight racing oil like Valvoline VR1

20/50 is what was recommended. I stick with Classic versions of that, such as Castrol, Millers, Penrite etc. Don't use the thinner, modern oils they are created for completely different engine types.
