BJ-8 Exhaust Installation

Project update! I was able to remove the old system in about 15 minutes! Nothing was frozen and all of the bolts came out easily:smile:. I learned two things though, first, the flange to the manifold had hex bolts instead of studs and nuts. While I realize this isn't the correct arrangement, is there any reason replacing the old bolts with new stainless ones would not work as well? The old system never leaked with bolts. Second, when I compared my mounts with the Moss catalog, I do not have the set of mounts that appear to go just aft of the mufflers under the seat. I have searched the frame and cannot see anywhere that the mount would go and my frame does not appear to have ever been patched that would cover the mounting holes. Can anyone describe if they have this mid-mount and where the rubber mount bolts into the frame?

Thanks again for the help!
As mentioned there is two threaded holes.

Another suggestion; I've learned to drill through the rubber into the backing plate of the mounts and insert a 10X32 screw. This will prevent the muffler from dropping down onto the pavement if and when the rubber "let's go".

Now THAT's a great idea! I have been worried about the rubber and metal separating on those mounts since I installed them last summer.

Final Update!

Got her back on the road yesterday on a fine 65 degree day in Fort Worth. The exhaust is in and fit great -no leaks or rattles and still sounds like a Healey. The more I got into the installation, the more I agree rjc157, what a PITA!! I had to re-design/re-manufacture nearly every mount as the PO had cobbled the mounts on the old system pretty heavily. It all fits but in looking at the car on level ground, I will have a few tweaks to try to raise it some more after I see another BJ8 at the next event.

Thanks for the help and advice from all who responded.
