I recently celebrated my 42nd and for that, my lady scored something I think is pretty cool. She overheard me talking to a friend about getting rid of the new plates and finding the correct year of manufacture plates. And that is what she found! Sneaky little lady. Anyhow I took the car to a show today and just put the plates on a couple nights ago, and had a good shot of the rear end so I thought I'd take a pic. IMO, it looks way better than new plates. Something about a classic with the proper plates. In California, 1956 was the last stamping of plates until 1963. So correct for the car is a 56 plate with the 1960 YOM sticker.

Very cool. I've been mulling picking up a set of vintage plates for my car. Maryland used to do yearly (or every other year, IIRC) stampings until 1971, so I've had my eyes on a set of '69 or '70 plates.

SaxMan, if you need a source for clean plates, let me know. And thanks for the compliments!

Very nice. What a thoughtful gift.
I acquired some 1959-stamped Oregon plates, but they need some restoring (and that's about $100). So for now, I'll stick with my vanity "Boink" plates.

I have some black California plates that came with my car. What year did yellow turn to black?

the first run after 56 yellow plates was in 63 with the black plates with yellow lettering. those went thru 69
