My B is 4 months old now. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif She needs a birth certificate. I have the link and application to do that, but I don't know where to find:
chassis #
body #
engine #

I have the VIN (which they don't require) and the commission # though. Where do I look? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

The VIN is the chassis #. Body number you won't find, they were on earlier cars, and were really unofficial anyway. The engine number is to be found on a metal plate, riveted to the block just below the cylinder head on the spark plugs side.

JB -

Engine # is stamped onto a metal plate affixed to the passenger side of the engine, under the spark plugs. There was a lot of confusion over body numbers, and I think they stopped recording them in the early 70's. What's important is your VIN, which you've got, and the commission number, which should be on a red and white plate near the bonnet latch (unless you have a model later than '76 - apparently they quit using them then).

At any rate, if you send in your VIN, the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust can fill you in on the details.

Thanks. I do have the commission # and I'll go find the engine #. ((would make perfect sense that it's on the engine, right?))

The car number for cars 1970 on is stamped on a plate secured to the left hand door post. The body number for early chromed cars is stamped on a plate on the left front valance behind the radiator diaphragm or in some cases in front of the radiator diaphragm. The engine number is stamped on a plate secured to the right hand side of the cylinder block. The commision number is stamped on a plate secured to the bonnet lock platform. The gearbox number is stamped on top of the gearbox casing adjacent to the dipstick. All this information is compliments of Moss Motors MGB Restoration and Parts catalogue.
