Bill Piggots Triumph Originallity Guide?

I have the book but nothing on page 246 about the TR3. Page 146 is about TR3 but no mention of the grille. Perhaps I have a newer edition.

On page 54 I found the following:

The TR3 uses what was has become known as the "cellular" or "eggbox" grille. This polished aluminum grille, which was an attempt to update the car's styling, screws into place in the front apron. The chromes "reveal" moulding continues all round the mouth and setts off the cellular grille nicely, and TR3's without this difficult to source four part moulding look distinctly unfinished.

Below a few pictures of the TR2/3's there is an additional comment:

The chromed reveal moulding is made up of 4 parts - upper and lower pieces, plus two small side sections to cover the joins.

Hope that helps
DJ

There are at least three different editions by Bill Piggott that cover the TR3, with widely varying page numbers. "Page 246" sounds like the most recent omnibus volume, which I have at home. Let me know if you still need something looked up.

thanks Randall. I was wondering if there was such a thing as a TR3 grille guard? There is one for sale on Ebay but I am skeptical that there is such a thing as I have never seen one in all the Tr3 pictures I've seen over the years. I did see a reference to a grill guard on a site that was selling Piggot's book but couldn't open the page which was 246. The Ebay pic is intriguing as it could conceivably be an aftermarket guard or a one off. Wonder what it would look like on a 3???

As noted, page 246 is in the TR4-6 section; but there is a description of an optional factory "grille guard" starting on page 245 and extending onto 246. No photo, but the text notes that it "attaches to the bumper inboard of the overriders, and doubles as a badge bar." I am guessing that it refers to the item shown below (taken from a scan of a TR4A factory accessory brochure supplied by Darrell Walker).

I doubt that the item shown on eBay is factory; most likely it is one of the huge array of aftermarket parts that used to be available for these cars. (Or it could be that the "elderly lady" was mistaken, and it's actually for a Land Rover LR3  ) As long as I'm peering into my crystal ball, I'll also guess that it was intended to replace the original bumpers rather than supplement them.

Here's a period aftermarket grille guard

I think your right Randall ,the Ebay " guard does look like it would be a substitute for the bumper itself. At 52"( if that's the inside width) it would just make it to curve around the fenders. It doesn't look like the grille guards in the photos you found. Maybe it's an Aussie " Roo Bar" lol. Here's a thought....what if the package that is marked TR3 that was found with the grille doesn't being with it! I'm going to email the seller and ask him to open it up.

Unfortunately, I can't see Randall's picture(s) at work. But I'm guessing that we're all looking at this auction:

1958 TRIUMPH TR3 NOS GRILL GUARD? BUMPER TRIM?

I agree that this is likely an old accessory from American Carry Products (later AMCO) or the like, often available as "authorized" optional equipment through dealers but also through the likes of MG Mitten, WILCO and all those other old Road & Track advertisers way back when!

In the auction, I'm not quite certain what shown is supposed to go on the front of a TR, but it looks like a lot of what's shown is for the rear, wrapping around to the fenders and spanning between the two overriders...even "fanning out" so as not to obscure a license plate on the rear. It all looks pretty cool to me, actually!

I hear you. However, considering what you're most likely to encounter on the roads and parking lots nowadays (tons of SUVs with bush guards!), it might well be worth the pain in the aesthetics to have such a guard on your TR! I've told the stories many times of how front and rear AMCO accessory guard bars saved my GT6+ on numerous occasions back in the 1970s...BEFORE all the huge SUVs roamed the roads!
